Meaning has been attributed to flowers for thousands of years, in traditional cultures throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa. During the Victoria era, many guidebooks were published to help those involved in delicate courtship rituals parse their exchange of posies. While most of the nuances have fallen out of favour, we still choose red roses to symbolize passion, yellow roses for friendship and poppies for remembrance.
